I have spent more than $20 million on Meta Ads.
Not in a simulation. Not in a course. Across real campaigns, for real businesses, over 13 years of managing Facebook and Instagram advertising for clients in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and international markets.
I hold Meta Business Partner status — a certification Meta gives to agencies and professionals who meet their standards for ad spend, performance, and technical expertise. Not everyone who runs a Facebook ad qualifies. The distinction matters, and I will explain why later in this guide.
In that time, I have helped e-commerce stores in Jordan achieve up to 13x ROAS through Meta campaigns — meaning for every 1 JOD spent on ads, 13 JOD came back in revenue. I have built lead generation systems for service businesses that deliver qualified leads consistently month after month. I have launched awareness campaigns that took brands from unknown to recognized in their market within weeks.
But I have also audited hundreds of Meta ad accounts that were bleeding money because the fundamentals were wrong. No pixel installed. No retargeting set up. No lookalike audiences built. Thousands of dinars spent driving traffic to a website with zero tracking, so every click disappeared into a black hole.
This guide is what I wish every business owner in Jordan and the Gulf would read before spending a single dinar on Meta Ads. It covers how the platform actually works, which campaign types match which business goals, and the mistakes that waste the most money.
Why Meta Ads Still Dominate in the MENA Region
Google captures demand — people searching for something they already want. Meta creates demand. It puts your product or service in front of people who were not actively looking for it but match the profile of your ideal customer.
In Jordan and the Gulf, Facebook and Instagram remain the highest-reach social platforms for advertising. The user base is massive, the targeting capabilities are deep, and the cost of reaching a thousand people is still significantly lower than most other channels in the region.
What makes Meta particularly powerful is its data. When your tracking is set up correctly, Meta's algorithm learns who buys from you — not just who clicks. It finds more people like your buyers across its network and shows them your ads. The more data you feed it, the smarter it gets.
The key phrase there is "when your tracking is set up correctly." Most of the wasted ad spend I see comes down to one problem: the foundation was never built properly. The algorithm cannot optimize toward something it cannot measure.
The Meta Ads Foundation: Get This Right Before You Spend Anything
The Meta Pixel
The Meta Pixel is a small piece of code installed on your website that tracks what visitors do after they click your ad. Without the pixel, Meta has no idea what happens after someone clicks your ad. It optimizes for clicks — not revenue, not leads, not anything that actually matters to your business.
I have taken over accounts where businesses were spending 2,000–3,000 JOD per month with no pixel installed. Every dinar was spent blind. The first thing I do with any new client is audit the pixel. Not glance at it — verify that every event is firing correctly, that the data matches what the website actually records, and that the Conversions API is connected as a server-side backup.
If your pixel is not installed correctly, nothing else in this guide matters.
The Conversions API (CAPI)
The pixel runs in the browser. Browser-based tracking is increasingly unreliable because of iOS privacy updates, ad blockers, and cookie restrictions. Meta's solution is the Conversions API — a server-side connection that sends conversion data directly from your server to Meta, bypassing the browser entirely. I set up CAPI for every client because relying on the pixel alone means you are losing data.
Event Setup and Custom Conversions
Standard events include ViewContent, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, Purchase, and Lead. For e-commerce, I set up the full purchase funnel with revenue values attached to each purchase event so Meta can optimize for actual revenue, not just completed transactions. For service businesses, I set up Lead events and assign values based on lead quality.
Audience Infrastructure
- Custom Audiences — people who have already interacted with your business. Website visitors, video viewers, social engagers, your existing customer list. These are your warmest audiences.
- Lookalike Audiences — Meta's most powerful targeting tool. Give Meta a source audience (your buyers) and it finds people across its network who share similar characteristics. A 1% lookalike of your purchasers consistently outperforms interest-based targeting.
- Saved Audiences — interest and demographic-based targeting. Useful for awareness campaigns and initial testing, but should not be your primary method once you have enough data.
Campaign Types: Matching the Right Objective to Your Goal
Sales Campaigns
For e-commerce businesses, Sales campaigns optimized for Purchase are the primary revenue driver. This is where I have generated up to 13x ROAS for e-commerce clients in Jordan. For stores with larger product catalogs, catalog sales campaigns with dynamic product ads (DPA) automatically show each user the specific products they are most likely to buy — based on what they browsed on your site.
Lead Generation Campaigns
For service businesses — clinics, consultancies, real estate, education, professional services. Website conversion campaigns drive traffic to a landing page. Instant Forms let users submit without leaving Facebook or Instagram — lower friction but potentially lower lead quality. I test both and measure not just cost per lead, but cost per qualified lead.
Awareness Campaigns
Not every campaign needs to generate an immediate sale or lead. Brand awareness campaigns make your target audience familiar with your brand so that when they are ready to buy, they think of you first. I use awareness campaigns for new brand launches, market entry, and supporting sales campaigns by warming up cold audiences.
The mistake most businesses make with awareness campaigns is measuring them by the wrong KPIs. If your agency is reporting ROAS on your awareness campaign, they are either miscategorizing the campaign or misleading you.
Creative: The Variable That Makes or Breaks Your Campaign
What Works in the Jordanian and Gulf Market
- Video outperforms static images in almost every campaign I run in this region. Short-form video — 15 to 30 seconds — with strong hooks in the first three seconds consistently delivers better cost per result.
- Arabic-first creative matters when targeting Arabic-speaking audiences. For most local businesses, Arabic creative performs better because it connects with the audience in their language.
- User-generated content style outperforms polished studio content for many product categories. A real person using your product on camera, filmed on a phone, often gets more engagement and more conversions.
- Product demonstration works particularly well for e-commerce. Show the product being used, unboxed, compared, or styled. Give people a reason to stop scrolling.
Creative Testing
I never launch a campaign with a single piece of creative. Every campaign starts with at least three to five variations. I review creative performance weekly and replace underperforming assets. Creative fatigue is real — an ad that performs brilliantly in week one can decline by week three as the audience sees it repeatedly.
Retargeting: Where Most Jordanian Businesses Leave Money on the Table
The Retargeting Funnel I Build
- Website Visitors (7–30 days) — Everyone who visited your site but did not convert. They get ads highlighting your value proposition, social proof, or a time-sensitive offer.
- Product Viewers — People who viewed specific product pages. Dynamic ads showing the exact products they looked at.
- Cart Abandoners — The highest-intent retargeting audience. A simple reminder, free shipping offer, or limited stock message often brings them back.
- Engaged Social Audience — People who liked, commented, or interacted with your posts but never visited your website. Bridge ads move them from social to website action.
Budgeting: How to Think About Meta Ad Spend
Meta's algorithm needs data to optimize. For the Jordanian market, I recommend a minimum of 15–20 JOD per day per ad set for conversion campaigns. For the Gulf, CPMs are higher, so the minimum daily budget should be proportionally higher.
- 60–70% to conversion and sales campaigns — this is your revenue engine.
- 15–20% to retargeting — this recovers potential customers who did not convert the first time.
- 10–20% to awareness and testing — this feeds the top of the funnel and tests new audiences and creative.
What Meta Business Partner Means
Meta Business Partner is a specific designation requiring Meta's standards for ad spend management, technical implementation, and campaign performance. Holding this status means direct access to Meta support channels, beta features, and advance insights into platform changes.
When Meta changes its algorithm, updates its policies, or launches new ad formats, I know about it early and can adapt client campaigns before the changes impact performance.
The Mistakes That Waste the Most Money
No Pixel or Broken Pixel
Without proper tracking, you are paying for data you never collect. Every day without a working pixel is a day of lost learning.
No Retargeting Campaigns
You pay to drive 1,000 people to your website. 970 of them leave without buying. Without retargeting, those 970 people are gone — and you paid for every one of them.
Wrong Campaign Objective
A Traffic campaign finds people who click. An Engagement campaign finds people who like and comment. Neither will find people who buy — unless you tell it to optimize for purchases.
Audience Overlap
Running multiple ad sets targeting overlapping audiences means you are bidding against yourself in the same auction. This drives costs up and confuses the algorithm.
Creative Neglect
Launching a campaign with one ad and never updating it. Audiences get exhausted, frequency spikes, and costs double — but nobody refreshed the creative because the campaign was "set and forget."
No Value-Based Optimization
For e-commerce, without passing revenue values, Meta treats a 5 JOD order the same as a 500 JOD order. Value-based optimization makes the algorithm prioritize high-value customers, which directly improves ROAS.
Meta Ads and the Full Marketing Funnel
Meta Ads do not exist in isolation. In my practice, Meta is one part of a multi-channel strategy that includes Google Ads, SEO, and increasingly TikTok and Snapchat advertising. The most successful businesses use Meta for demand generation and retargeting, Google for demand capture, and SEO for long-term organic growth.
If your entire marketing budget is on one platform, you are vulnerable. Algorithms change. Costs fluctuate. Accounts get restricted. Diversification is not a luxury — it is risk management.
How I Structure a Meta Ads Account
- Week 1–2: Audit and Foundation — Audit the existing pixel setup, conversion tracking, audience infrastructure, and past campaign data. Fix everything that is broken before any new campaigns go live.
- Week 3–4: Campaign Launch — Campaigns launch with structured testing — multiple creatives, audience segments, and placements. The algorithm needs 50 conversion events per ad set per week to exit learning.
- Month 2+: Optimization and Scaling — Scale what works, cut what does not, refresh creative, expand audiences, introduce retargeting layers. Monthly reports show revenue, ROAS, cost per lead, cost per acquisition.
Start With an Audit
If you are currently running Meta Ads and are not confident in the results, or if you suspect your setup is incomplete — start with an audit.
