Is Your Business Invisible to AI? How to Audit Your GEO Readiness

·July 18, 2026

Most businesses have no idea whether AI search tools know they exist. They invest in Google Ads, SEO, social media — but they have never checked whether ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity would recommend them if a potential customer asked.

This audit takes 30–45 minutes and gives you a clear picture of your current AI search visibility. You do not need any tools beyond a web browser and access to AI platforms. For the full framework, read my GEO Guide.

Step 1: Query the AI Tools (10 Minutes)

Open each of these AI tools and ask the same set of questions:

  • ChatGPT (chat.openai.com)
  • Google Gemini (gemini.google.com)
  • Perplexity (perplexity.ai)
  • Microsoft Copilot (copilot.microsoft.com)

Questions to Ask

  • "Who is the best [your service] in [your city]?"
  • "Recommend a [your service] provider in [your country]."
  • "What are the top [your industry] companies in [your region]?"
  • "Which [your service] should I hire for [specific need]?"
  • "Tell me about [your brand name]."

If your brand does not appear in any response on any platform, you are currently invisible to AI search. That is your baseline — everything from here is about changing it.

Step 2: Evaluate Your Website Content (10 Minutes)

Entity Definition Check

Can you find a clear, single sentence on your homepage or about page that states: what your brand is, where you are located, what services you provide, and who you serve?

Score: Clear entity definition present → Pass. Vague or missing → Fail.

FAQ Content Check

Do any pages on your website have FAQ sections that directly answer questions users would ask AI?

Score: FAQ sections with specific, authoritative answers → Pass. No FAQ content → Fail.

Content Depth Check

Do you have comprehensive, long-form content (2,000+ words) on your core service topics? Or is your content limited to short service page descriptions?

Score: Multiple pillar-length guides → Pass. Only short service pages → Fail.

Structured Data Check

Paste your homepage URL into Google's Rich Results Test (search.google.com/test/rich-results). Does it detect Organisation, LocalBusiness, or other relevant schema markup?

Score: Relevant schema detected → Pass. No structured data → Fail.

Step 3: Evaluate Your External Presence (10 Minutes)

Google Your Brand Name

What appears on the first page of Google results for your brand name? Your website (should be #1), Google Business Profile, social media profiles, directory listings, articles or mentions, reviews. If only your website appears and nothing else, your external presence is weak.

Score: 5+ independent sources on page 1 → Strong. 1–2 sources → Weak.

Profile Consistency Check

Open your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Facebook, and any directory listings. Is your brand name, location, services, contact information, and description consistent across all of them? Inconsistencies confuse AI models — conflicting signals weaken your brand's entity recognition.

Score: Consistent across all profiles → Pass. Inconsistencies found → Fail.

Step 4: Score Your GEO Readiness

  • 6–7 Passes/Strong: Your GEO foundation is solid. You may already appear in some AI responses. Focus on expanding content depth and earning more third-party mentions.
  • 4–5 Passes/Strong: You have a partial foundation. Key gaps exist that are preventing AI visibility. Address the failing areas first.
  • 0–3 Passes/Strong: Your business is likely invisible to AI search. You need a comprehensive GEO strategy starting with entity definitions, content depth, structured data, and external presence building.

Step 5: Build Your Fix List

Priority 1: Entity Definition and Structured Data

If AI does not know what your brand is, nothing else matters. Write clear entity definitions on your website and implement Organisation or LocalBusiness schema. This is the fastest fix with the highest impact.

Priority 2: Content Depth

If your website has only thin service pages, AI models have nothing substantial to draw from. Create comprehensive pillar content on your core services. One in-depth guide per service is the minimum starting point.

Priority 3: External Presence

If your brand only exists on your website, expand to directory listings, social profiles, and actively pursue third-party mentions. Update all profiles for consistency. Start a review acquisition process.

Priority 4: FAQ and Conversational Content

Add FAQ sections to your existing pages. Write blog posts that directly answer the questions people ask AI. Structure content for easy extraction.

Priority 5: Ongoing Monitoring

Set a quarterly reminder to re-run the AI queries from Step 1. Track whether your brand starts appearing and whether the information is accurate. Adjust your strategy based on what changes.
