Shopify Apps You Actually Need (And the Ones Slowing Your Store Down)

·July 18, 2026

The Shopify App Store has thousands of apps. Every app promises to increase your sales, improve your experience, or add a feature you did not know you needed. And every app you install adds code that loads on every page of your store.

After building 75+ Shopify stores, my philosophy is clear: install the minimum number of apps needed to run your business effectively. Every unnecessary app is dead weight — slowing your store, adding complexity, and costing you a monthly subscription for functionality you do not use.

Apps You Need: The Essential Stack

Reviews App

Social proof drives conversions. Customers in Jordan and the Gulf check reviews before purchasing. A reviews app that collects and displays customer reviews on product pages is essential.

Recommended: Judge.me (affordable, fast-loading, supports photo reviews) or Loox (photo-focused reviews, good for visual products). The app should be lightweight — some review apps add significant JavaScript that slows your page.

Email Marketing

Abandoned cart recovery, welcome sequences, post-purchase follow-ups, and promotional campaigns. Email marketing generates revenue from customers you have already acquired — the cheapest source of repeat sales.

Recommended: Klaviyo (the industry standard for Shopify email marketing — deep integration, powerful automation, strong analytics). Abandoned cart emails alone can recover 5–15% of lost sales.

SEO App

Managing meta titles, descriptions, and structured data across hundreds of products. Manually editing SEO fields on 200+ product pages is impractical.

Recommended: SEO Manager or Smart SEO for bulk meta tag management and automated structured data.

Translation App (If Bilingual)

Recommended: Shopify Translate & Adapt (free, native) or Langify for more control over translations. Native Arabic content — not auto-translated — is essential for the local market.

Apps That Are Situationally Useful

Upsell and Cross-Sell

  • Install if: Your product catalog has natural complement pairs (phone + case, shirt + trousers). Upsell apps can increase average order value by 10–20%.
  • Skip if: Your catalog is too small or products do not naturally pair. A forced "You might also like" section with irrelevant suggestions hurts more than it helps.

Loyalty and Rewards

  • Install if: Your business model depends on repeat customers (consumables, fashion, beauty). A loyalty programme gives customers a reason to come back to your store instead of a competitor.
  • Skip if: You sell high-ticket items with long repurchase cycles. A loyalty app on a furniture store is unnecessary overhead.

Pop-Up and Lead Capture

  • Install if: You have an active email marketing strategy and need to grow your list. A well-timed exit-intent pop-up offering a first-purchase discount can significantly grow your subscriber base.
  • Skip if: You have no email marketing in place. Collecting emails you never contact is pointless — and the pop-up slows your page and annoys visitors for no benefit.

Apps You Should Almost Never Install

Page Builder Apps

Apps that replace Shopify's native section editor with a drag-and-drop page builder. These add massive JavaScript overhead — sometimes doubling or tripling page load time.

Why to avoid: Modern Shopify themes (Online Store 2.0) have powerful native section editors. Instead, choose a theme with the layout options you need or have a developer build native Shopify sections — fast, lightweight, and no app dependency.

Multiple Tracking/Analytics Apps

Installing separate apps for heat mapping, session recording, A/B testing, analytics dashboards, and conversion tracking — each adding its own JavaScript. Each script adds load time. Many tools provide overlapping data.

Instead: Use GA4 for analytics, your ad platforms' native pixels for conversion tracking, and install Hotjar or similar tools temporarily for specific research questions — then remove them.

SEO Apps That Promise Rankings

Apps claiming to "boost your SEO" through automated link building, keyword stuffing, or magical optimisation. These either do nothing useful or actively harm your SEO.

SEO is done through content, technical optimisation, and genuine authority building — not through a Shopify app. If an app promises page 1 rankings, it is lying.

Currency Converter Pop-Ups

Apps that display a currency converter overlay or pop-up. Shopify Markets handles multi-currency natively. A separate currency converter app adds unnecessary code and creates a worse user experience than Shopify's built-in solution.

The Audit Process

If your store already has 15–20+ apps installed, here is how to audit:

  • List every app. Go to Settings → Apps and sales channels.
  • Categorise each one: Essential (directly drives revenue or is legally required), Useful (adds value but not critical), and Unnecessary (unused, redundant, or replaceable by native Shopify functionality).
  • Uninstall the Unnecessary category entirely. Not deactivate — uninstall. Then check your theme code for leftover snippets the app may have left behind.
  • Test speed after cleanup. Run PageSpeed Insights before and after. You will almost certainly see measurable improvement.
